Bengaluru: In response to the prevailing drought conditions in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar inaugurated the ‘Neeru Ulisi, Bengaluru Belisi’ (Save Water, Develop Bengaluru) campaign. Alongside the campaign launch, four mobile applications aimed at groundwater management and water conservation, developed by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), were released.
Urging Responsible Water Usage
Addressing the water scarcity plaguing the city, Shivakumar emphasized the need for responsible and judicious water usage. He highlighted the impact of the dry spell on tube wells, with 6,900 out of 13,900 tube wells already dried up. Stressing the importance of awareness, he emphasized the necessity for obtaining BWSSB permission before drilling new tube wells.
Crackdown on Illegal Practices
Shivakumar also revealed measures undertaken to regulate private tanker operations, ensuring fair and transparent water distribution. By registering tankers, the government aims to curb illicit activities in the water supply sector.
Managing Water Scarcity
While acknowledging the challenges posed by water scarcity, Shivakumar reassured the public of the government’s proactive management of the situation. He urged officials to address water shortages promptly and directed them to implement necessary measures to alleviate the crisis.
Call for Public Cooperation
BWSSB Chairman Dr. V Ram Prasath Manohar echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in resolving the water crisis. He stressed that collective efforts are essential for finding sustainable solutions.
Potential Tariff Adjustment
Hinting at a potential revision in water tariffs, Shivakumar mentioned the possibility of an increase in rates after a decade-long freeze. Emphasizing the need to strengthen BWSSB, he expressed intentions to review tariff structures following the general elections.
Focusing on Solutions, Not Politics
Shivakumar dismissed political concerns surrounding the water scarcity issue, urging a concerted effort to address the problem. Regardless of election dynamics, he pledged to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply and directed authorities to take proactive measures to mitigate water shortages.
