Davangere: A traditional stepwell known as a Kalyani was built near Honda Circle in Old Davangere as a component of the Smart City project. Surprisingly, even after a year since its inauguration by MP GM Siddeshwar during the BJP government’s tenure, the public has been unable to access it. The absence of upkeep has resulted in the Kalyani deteriorating, raising concerns among local residents.
To mark Gandhi Jayanti, members of the Environment Protection Forum came together to undertake a cleaning initiative at the Kalyani. Girish Devaramane, a representative of the forum, emphasized that this Kalyani was constructed as part of the Davangere Smart City Project, with a budget exceeding two crores. Despite its inauguration, it has not been officially transferred to the Metropolitan Corporation.
Devaramane urged the district administration to swiftly make the Kalyani accessible to the public. This Kalyani, reminiscent of the architectural style seen in monuments in Hampi, boasts elegant pillars and a square layout, complete with a central water fountain. Unfortunately, the fountain’s motors have malfunctioned, rendering it inoperative. Previously, the site was an unused pit that underwent transformation into the Kalyani as a component of the Smart City project. Although Smart City officials are willing to transfer control of the Kalyani to the corporation, local corporation members have yet to respond adequately to the situation.
Local residents have voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the inadequate management of the Kalyani, viewing it as a regrettable outcome for an otherwise commendable Smart City initiative.
