Villagers force turn back of vehicle carrying leopard for release in forest

Karkala: Forest officials usually do not listen to the plea of the Mala villagers in the case of wild animals. Mullur village in Mala is a residential area, where the wild animals are released by the officials. They catch the man-eaters and release them in the forests which further cause trouble for the locals. In a recent development forest officials finally decided to release the leopard in the Pilikula Nisargadhama instead in the forest area after protests by the locals.

The incident happened in Naravi-Hosmaru region which comes under Venoor forest area. The officials had caught a leopard using a trap. As per the order of higher officials, the caged leopard was taken to S K Border through Bajagoli road. On getting reliable information about the leopard, localites gathered at Kadari forest department checkpost. The checkpost staff allowed the officials to move. Enraged youth from the region followed the vehicle in thier bikes. They stopped the vehicle and the officials and demanded that the animal not to be released as it may cause damage to the people of the region.

After much discussion the leopard was taken to Pilikula nisargadhama.

In Mullur region several wild animals are found. forest officials are mainly responsible for this. Poisonous snakes, leopards and other wild animals are released in the residential areas which makes the life of localities difficult. Many domesticated animals are killed by these wild animals.
