Udupi: Udupi District, which has the distinction of being a model for the State in waste disposal and implementing them properly, is currently witnessing another innovative cleanliness drive pilot project.
The method of successful management of dry waste falling in the compound of the house has been implemented on a pilot basis in the Udupi Deputy Commissioner’s Quarters and a “Dry Leaves Compost Bed” has been formed by combining the dry grass of the hand garden in the hostel, the leaves of the plant that had fallen from the garden plants, and the dry leaves that fell from the tree. The leaves and grass collected in the compound are mixed with cow dung, arranged in a 10×6 size bed pattern and covered with gunny bags. It can be used for plants in the hand garden or it will be possible to grow the plants by planting the seeds in the same manure bed. Most importantly, the premises of the house will be clean and free from garbage.
Already the drum compost method has been adopted for wet waste management in the Deputy Commissioner’s quarters and the present dry waste management has also been successfully implemented and converted into a model accommodation.
Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) sanitation workers have constructed this innovative compost bed in the hand garden of Udupi Deputy Commissioner’s residence on the directions of Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer.
Solid Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) sanitation workers have been trained on this model by Vellore Srinivasan. Raghunath, District consultant, Swachh Bharat Mission (GR), has guided the team.
Deputy Commissioner M. Kurma Rao said that the dry leaves compost bed is a model for how the dry waste lying on the premises of the house can be used as a resource. Even the public can systematically reuse the dry waste lying in the compound of their houses in this manner without burning or throwing it away,” he added.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer H. Prasanna said that the waste collected in the District is already being properly disposed of through various methods and with a view to motivate the public by adopting an innovative dry leaves compost bed model on a pilot basis in the homes of Government officials, the first of its kind has been installed in their quarters in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner. It is proposed to implement this model in all Government offices in the District including Gram Panchayats and Primary Health Centres. The public can take the help of sanitation workers of SLRM of the District if they need more information on converting waste into a resource,” he added.
