The Udupi District Disaster Management Authority has issued a cautionary advisory urging residents to safeguard themselves against the ongoing heatwave conditions as temperatures rise.
Protective Measures Recommended
Residents are advised to utilize umbrellas for sun protection, seek shade whenever possible, and opt for loose, light-colored cotton clothing. Additionally, they should limit outdoor activities, especially between noon and 3 p.m., and stay hydrated by drinking water, buttermilk, or other liquids, including ORS.
Guidelines for Heatwave Stroke
Deputy Commissioner and Authority Chairman, K. Vidyakumari, emphasized the importance of promptly addressing heatwave-related health issues. Individuals experiencing heatstroke should be moved to a cool area immediately, ensuring minimal clothing and provided with a sponge bath using cold water or ice packs. If symptoms persist, immediate medical attention is advised.
Precautions for Vulnerable Groups
The authority also cautioned against leaving pets and children unattended in parked vehicles under the sun. Altering food habits by reducing spice intake and adopting practices such as applying coconut or castor oil on the head, sleeping on the floor with a thin cloth, and consuming green gram juice may help mitigate the effects of heat.
Call for Vigilance
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to the recommended safety measures to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses during the prevailing heatwave conditions.
