Udupi: Centre releases 25L litres of kerosene for fishermen

Udupi: Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shobha Karandlaje said that an additional 2,500 KL (25 lakh litres) of kerosene has been released by the Centre to the traditional country boat fishermen in the Coastal areas.

Speaking to mediapersons here, she said that during 2022 – 23, the Ministry of Petroleum, Government of India, has sanctioned a total of 5472 KL of kerosene to the traditional country boat users of Coastal Karnataka. Accordingly, 2472KL plus 3000KL of kerosene were released in a phased manner for the benefit of fishermen in the State. Today, the Petroleum Ministry has allocated an additional 2500 KL of kerosene, she added.

She said the Government has ordered the release of kerosene for the facility of traditional country boat fishermen in the Coastal areas.

The Central Government has released more quantity of kerosene to fishermen in the State than the allocation for the period 2022 – 23. In 2022-23, the State’s coastal fishermen received a total of 7972 K L (5472 KL+2500 KL) of kerosene from the Centre. The Central Government has responded to the needs of fishermen in the Coastal areas. This demand was made in a memorandum to the Petroleum Minister of the Union Government. Most of the people depend on fishing for their livelihood. Shobha Karandlaje had therefore urged that the request of traditional fishermen from the coastal areas be considered. Accordingly, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri responded to the request and fulfilled the demands of the fishermen.
