Manipal: Four prominent persons belonging to the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada were honoured for their contributions in different fields at a simple function at Fortune Inn Valley View on New Year’s Day.

Academy of General Education, Manipal University and Syndicate bank jointly organize this function on the first day of every year. This year the awards went to two bankers, a politician and an academician-cum-administrator. After Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Dr K Ramnarayan welcomed the gathering, Mr Jayarama Bhat and Mr M.D. Mallya (both Banking), Dr V Surendra Shetty (Academics) and Mr Oscar Fernandes (politics) were honoured and awarded.
P JAYARAMA BHAT: Awarded for being an “Outstanding Executive”. Mr P Jayarama Bhat is the Managing Director and CEO of Karnataka Bank. He was Managing Director of the Bank for three years from July 14, 2009 and on completion of that tenure he was made MD and CEO for another three-year term from July 14, 2012. Mr Bhat has rich experience in all facets of banking operations. He was on the board of Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Limited a joint venture of the bank from 2007 to 2009.
He was a member of the management committee of the Indian Banks Association (IBA) from August 2010 to August 2014 during which period he was the chairman of IBA Committee of Private Sector Banks. Mr Bhat is the honorary president of Bankers’ Club, Mangalore.
Mr Bhat is the recipient of several awards. The Aryabhata International Award, Outstanding Manager award Mangalore Management Association, A Shama Rao Memorial Outstanding Achievement Award, T.A.Pai Memorial Shreshtha Banker Award by Delhi Kannadigas and more recently the “CEO with HR Orientation Award by Asia Pacific HRM Congress are some of the awards he has been conferred.
Dr V SURENDRA SHETTY: Awarded for being “Eminent Academician and able administrator”.
He is the Pro Vice Chancellor of Manipal University in charge of Mangalore campus since July 2012. Dr Shetty was the first director of Manipal College of Dental Science when it started in Mangalore in 1987. He continued to be head of the institution for 25 years.
Dr Shetty has served various organizations in positions of responsibility. He was executive member of Dental Council of India, New Delhi from 1997 to 2003. He was a member of the selection committee of WHO scholarships in 1998. He was also chairman of Karnataka Task Force committee to review private dental colleges in the state. He was the president of the Indian Orthodontic Society in 1995 and chairman of Indian Board of Orthodontics in 2008-09.
Dr Shetty was recipient of several awards. He won the award for standing first in BDS in Mysore University in 1970. He was awarded the Captain Dr J S Gangadharan Memorial Award in Orthodontia in 1994. He was also recognized as the most outstanding Professor for the year 2012 by the Indian Orthodontic Society. Dr Shetty’s wife, Mrs Bharathi is a home maker and both his sons are dentists. The elder one, Dr Siddarth is head of department Orthodontics in MCODS Mangalore and the younger one, Dr Karthik is additional Professor in MCODS, Mangalore. Dr Shetty has been associated with Manipal University for almost 50 years.
Mr M D MALLYA: Awarded for being a “Banking Wizard”.
He Was the Chairman and Managing Director of Bank of Baroda from 2008 to 2012. He also headed the bank’s domestic and overseas branches and joint ventures. Prior to this appointment he was Chairman and MD of Maharashtra Bank from 2006 to 2008. And before that, he was Executive Director of the Oriental Bank of Commerce. During his tenure as chairman and Managing director, Bank of Baroda recorded a high growth of 30 per cent.
For his achievements, he was recognized as “banker of the year” in 2011 by Business World and Business Standard conferred the “bank of the year” in 2010 and 2012. That was a personal glory for Mr Mallya. MCX-CNBC-TV -18 presented the”Outstanding Financial Profession” in 2010. He also got Forbes Award Best CEO in public Sector in 2012.
OSCAR FERNANDES: Awarded for being “Veteran Politician”.
Mr Oscar Fernandes is a senior Congress leader and was the Union Cabinet Minister from 2004 to 2009, holding a number of portfolios such as Statistics and Programme Implementation, NRI Affairs, Youth and Sports Affairs and Labour and Employment in the UPA government. He is also the Chairman of Central Election Authority of the All India Congress Committee and was also the AICC general secretary. He played a big role in important decision the then government and the Congress party .
