The coastal regions of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts are witnessing a dramatic surge in the price of beans and other vegetables, attributed to soaring temperatures and an increase in auspicious occasions.

Price Hikes:

Previously, beans were priced between Rs 50 to 60 per kg in the local market, but they have now spiked to Rs 100 per kg. This increase is a result of water shortages impacting bean yields in both Bengaluru and Chikkamagaluru, the primary sourcing markets for the coastal region.

Impact on Other Vegetables:

Water scarcity has also affected the prices of other vegetables. Garlic, which saw a sharp increase, has now dropped to Rs 200 per kg. Lemons are priced higher, with medium-sized ones fetching between Rs seven to eight, compared to Rs six to seven previously.

Current Rates:

Ginger is now priced between Rs 160 to 200 per kg, while onions are being sold at Rs 30 per kilo. Additionally, tomatoes are priced at Rs 25, ridge gourd at Rs 60 to 70, okra at Rs 40, yam at Rs 80, and green brinjal at Rs 80.

Challenges and Adjustments:

With water scarcity impacting agricultural yields, residents are compelled to rely on vegetables sourced from districts further away. The fluctuating prices pose challenges to both consumers and vendors alike, as they navigate through the changing market dynamics
