Sorake visit sea erosion area, plans permanent solution

Udupi :State Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake visited erosion affected areas of Kaup recently.

During his visit he said that Sea erosion is a recurring problem in Coastal Karnataka.The strong tide have washed away number of coconut trees from the sea shore. It would continue in the coming days too. So steps will be taken to prevent furthur damage, he said.

A proposal of rupees 13 crores is sent to the government to initiate relief measures in the sea erosion areas. The government has sanctioned 3 crores which will be utilised in the areas where sea erosion is at peak. A permanent wall will be constructed across the sea shore,he assured.

Executive Engineer of the Department of Ports and Fisheries Taranath Rathod said that 1,000 metres of the coastline has been affected by sea erosion in the district. These included 200 metres at Shiroor Kalihithlu area at Gangolli, 100 metres each at Malpe, Kaup, and 200 metres at Kaup-Thottam.
