Sea erosion: 300 metre sea wall to come up in Padukere

Udupi: It is that time of the year again when people living in the coastal areas bear the brunt of sea erosion. The people living near Udyavara Padukere sea shore seem to be in great distress because of the sand that is left in and around their houses and on the streets as well, owing to the erosion.

sea erosionPadukere is a beautiful place with the sea on one side and a lake on the other. Both the water sources are separated by a single road; it attracts great number of tourists every season.

Currently, the water level is so high that the waves are said to be crossing the main road and leaving sand everywhere. This situation has prevailed during the past week.
The road in question is important because it links Udyavara to Malpe Padukere and most of the fishermen are dependant on this particular road for travelling regularly. The sand on the road has caused the roads to become slippery and the possibility of the road being declared as a danger zone will become a huge hindrance in their day-to-day work, according to the locals.

Local people also said that whenever such situations arise, the construction workers are asked to remove the sands from road. This is been happening for a long time and the sea water is said to have started mixing up with the lake (Papanashini Lake).

If the situation continues, there is a chance that both the lake and sea will amalgamate and Padukere will be form into an island soon. The people, hence, have demanded a permanent solution for this. The temporary arrangements made, they said, are washed off causing the same problem all over again.

To overcome this situation, The Department of Ports and Fisheries has decided to construct a 300-metre permanent sea wall near the Pandarinatha Bhajana Mandira in Padukere village. Karnataka Engineering Research Station at Krishnaraj Sagar in Mandya district will be preparing a design for the permanent sea wall. The government is said to have allocated Rs.1 Crore for this project.
