Mandya: The mysterious death of a lady at Nadaboganahalli near K R Pete took a violent turn when the family members of the deceased and their sympathisers resorted to setting the house of her husband ablaze on Tuesday.
The matter snowballed into a major crisis and police even had to impose Section 144 in the village to keep situation under control.
Priyanka (26), daughter of Thammaiahppa of Dudukanahalli near KR Pete was married off to Manjappa from Nadaboganahalli about seven years ago.
It is said that while the two remained happily married for about five years, over the last one and half years, Manjappa had been harassing Priyanka for more dowry, despite having received a hefty dowry during their wedding.
The family of the deceased has alleged that Manjappa was backed his parents and other relatives as well, who used to constantly harass Priyanka.
About 20 days ago a dialogue was held with Manjappa and his family and they had agreed that they would not harass her in future, but that did not bring any respite to her.
On Tuesday, Priyanka was found dead and her parents are of the opinion that Manjappa, his uncles Manjunatha and Puttaraju and aunt Manjula had tied Priyanka up and strangled her and then concocted a story that she had committed suicide.
The grieving parents and relatives of Priyanka ended up attacked residences of the accused stating that there were marks on her hands and legs indicating that she was forcefully tied up for quite some time.
When Manjappa and other accused surrendered themselves to police sensing deeper trouble, Priyanka’s family members and others resorted to pelting stones.
Police had to wield lathi to get situation under control.
Meanwhile, Priyanka’s dead body was sent to K R Hospital for medical examination.
