Udupi: The Congress party leaders staged a protest on account of “Aakrosh Diwas” in front of the Clock Tower, near Service Bus stand against the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes by the Central government.
Addressing the gathering, Nagesh Udyavara said the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been bringing irrational rules day by day. Narendra Modi, like Mohammed Bin Tuglaq is doing everything for publicity. People voted for Modi with a belief that he will bring black money from abroad. However he failed to fulfill his promise. Therefore, he diverted the minds of the people and took a decision to demonetise the high denomination currency without any knowledge of economy and implications on the poor people. Several deaths have occurred due to his decision of demonetisation. People have been standing in long queues for their own money to withdraw or exchange. The friends of BJP have crores worth of currencies already exchanged. It is the general public which is suffering and has sacrificed its life due to demonetisation.
In his address, Kishen Hegde Kolkebail said that BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi has infringed the rights of the people. “The situation of the poor people, especially those who depend on cooperative societies is getting worse day by day. The poor people are being pushed into begging since due to demonetisation they are unable to withdraw their money deposited in the societies. BJP which is canvassing on Hindutva and other communal modes is not bothered the least about people coming to streets without accessing their hard-earned money. Within 24 hours after the announcement of the demonetisation, fake notes came out for circulation. How could it be possible? It was due to the failure in government’s financial policy. Several crores of rupees were invested just prior to demonetisation by the BJP top brass and politicians. Crores were spent on the weddings of BJP leaders’ families. Allow the common people also to live”, he added.
M A Gaffoor, member of KPCC, also spoke during the protest. He pointed out the achievements of former congress leaders for the development of the country
Congress leader Jyothi Hebbar said, “We are not against demonetisation but we are against the way it has been implemented. Neither the government not the Reserve Bank had taken adequate measures before implementing it”.
Slogans were raised by the protestors against the BJP-led Union government and against Narendra Modi. They compared Modi to Hitler and Tuglaq.
President of Udupi CMC Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje, Councilors of Udupi CMC Veronica Cornelio and Janardhan Thonse, ZP members Sujaya Poojary and Amrith Shenoy among others were present.
