Udupi: High currents in the midst of the monsoon season claimed a life of a 22 year old tourist at the Malpe beach in Udupi District on Wednesday evening. The deceased has been identified as Shivakumar (22), a native of Herikeroor of Haveri District, who was   working in Bengaluru city.
He had come to Udupi along with a group of over a dozen friends from Bengaluru.

The tragedy took place at around 4: 00 p.m. when  the group of friends entered the sea for a swim.

Eye witnesses said that Shivakumar was dragged away by a powerful wave when he took a dip. Even though his friends tried to rescue him, he   vanished within a few seconds.

A rescue team reached the spot within a few minutes and launched a search operation. A case has been registered in  Malpe Police
