Udupi: The Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Brahmavar which is affiliated to the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shimoga organized a two days “Krishimela” on 11th and 12th October, 2014.


The 2 day mela is the result of the coordination of various organisations of Agricultural, Horticulture, Watershed Department, Animal Husbandry, Sericulture Fisheries and Forestry and other departments.
The mela was inaugurated by Vinay Kumar Sorake. In his inaugural speech he said the main objective of such a Mela is to give maximum knowledge of latest agricultural technologies to farmers.
As our economy is depended on agriculture, and agriculture is depended on nature so it is necessary to have a technical upgradation to sustain with in tune with nature. The Mela will help the farmers to get maximum knowledge regarding latest farming techniques, he said.
He added that the government always supports farmers and wishes to give the maximum price for their yields.
There were demonstrations, discussions and three seminars at the 2 day mela. Farmers interacted with scientists in all the seminars freely and clarified their field problems.
There were hundreds of stalls with high yielding rice varieties and seed production, preparation of Dapog nursery and SRI method of paddy cultivation, CO-4 Fodder grass demonstration, Multi storied cropping system and nutrient management in coconut and Arecanut, Cashew grafting and soil and water management in cashew gardens, and demonstration of organic manure compost were organized.
Poultry, goat, rabbit duck and Fisheries demo units, preparation and demonstration of Bordeaux mixture, exhibition and demonstration of agricultural implements, demonstration of value added food products, Exhibition and sale of decorative plants were also seen.
While speaking with NK, a few farmers said that nothing new this year, every year they come up with same stalls.
