Karkala: “Kambala supporters must concentrate on making the sport violence free rather than arguing on the laws”, said a committee from Veterinary University in Bidar on Sunday February 15. The committee was observing the Miyar Kambala when it made these remarks.

The committee of experts from the university led by its dean, Vasant Shetty noted down details of various aspects about how the buffalo race is organized. Acknowledging the controversies surrounding Kambala, ministry of law and animal husbandry headed by T B Jayachandra had asked a team of experts from the Veterinary University to observe the Kambala and submit a report.
The committee was set up in view of the arguments and counter arguments in Court, after which the court granted permission last year, with stringent conditions on harming the animals attached. The Committee will examine all aspects of the Kambala and send in a report based on which the government is expect to seek an exemption and permission to continue to hold Kambala.
The committee noted that buffaloes are required to only cover a pre-specified distance at Kambalas, and that these animals are never used for either exhibition or perform any acts. They will be submitting a report about their findings and recommendations to the government, but refused to reveal anything else about the report.
