Udupi: “As per the constitution, women should be given equal rights to men”, said Dr S R Nayak the State Law Commission chairperson said after inaugurating the new Human rights commission office, Udupi on Friday December 12.
Human rights should protect against discrimination between men and women. Both should enjoy equal status in the society. India is a democratic country and everyone has the right to uphold humanitarian values.

The dignity of women is in grave threat in the society. It is the dream of Basavanna to bring women from the house hold to the main stream of employment.
He stated that gender bias is the most predominant factor in our country which is generally a violation of human rights.
Women constitute nearly half of the total population. We do have successful women in the county though we cannot confidently say that women are free, he added.
Currently women represent only 10-12 percent of the total strength in the legislative bodies.
While speaking about this year’s theme of human rights day celebrations he said ‘Human Rights 365’ stands for rights every day.
He opined that each individual should be aware of legal knowledge. The children and youth should be told about the importance of human rights and laws that protect human rights, he said.
He also attended the student interaction programme at MGM College.
