Karkala : The order issued by the Udupi Deputy Commissioner on July 18 banning ferrying of people in goods jeeps and tempos and warning of legal action against those flouting the rules, has still not been implemented. As if to make a mockery of the orders, people, particularly construction workers are still ferried in such goods vehicles by contractors at several places.

In fact the DC’s orders had come in the backdrop of the July 18 mishap at Hirgana Majoor in Karkala wherein four labourers had died and 18 others injured when the goods tempo carrying over 25 labourers had overturned.
On Tuesday August 11, a goods tempo was seen ferrying over 16 workers on the Mangalore Road. Equipment pertaining to MESCOM were also found loaded in the vehicle.
