3rd International Non-Communicable diseases research meet held

Manipal: The 3rd International Non-Communicable Diseases Research Meet was inaugurated by Dr R Vishal, Deputy Commissioner Udupi District at the Interact Lecture Hall Complex here on Sunday January 11.

The Department of Internal Medicine and Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal along with The Department of Public Health, Manipal University organized the meet. The event also marked the collaboration of Manipal University along with the University of Alabama in Birmingham, USA, Florida University and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation.

International speakers Dr Dale Williams from University of Florida and Dr Cora Lewis from the University of Alabama, eminent national faculty Dr Usha Ayyagari and Dr Rakesh Sahay took part in the research meet.

While inaugurating the meet, Dr R Vishal said “It is very important for healthcare to deliver an established system.” Giving an example he said, “A simple iron supplement injection for pregnant women with severe anemia, which will go a long way to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.”

Dr Vinod Bhat, Pro Vice Chancellor Manipal University said that Manipal University had ventured into Medical Research in a big way. “The various international tie-ups have helped the University to take a big leap forward,” he said and emphasized on the importance of research in the field of non-communicable diseases.

Dr Dale Williams said the three successful years of collaboration with Manipal University with the University of Florida has transformed all research work outcome. There is dramatic progression in the outcome as a result of the collaboration,” Dr Williams added.

Dr Pradeep Kumar, Dean KMC Manipal said that the programmes at KMC Manipal is keen to change the health indices at state level through health awareness measures such as imbibing good life style habits should be imparted from school level itself.

Dr (Col) M Dayananda Medical Superintendent and COO Kasturba Hospital, Manipal said that the economic burden of people falling sick has catastrophic effect and it shatters them in a big way. He pointed out those needful actions to provide relief to them should be taken and emphasized on the importance of research in the field of medical sciences.

Dr Sudha Vidyasagar, HOD Department of Internal Medicine said that successfully addressing the complex causes of non-communicable diseases and reducing the global burden would involve interdisciplinary approaches.

About 250 delegates, including leading physicians and practitioners are part 80 advanced research papers were presented. The purpose of this symposium was to bring junior and senior faculty and academicians to discuss priorities in global non-communicable disease research.  R
