Mangaluru: The main bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) at New Delhi is all set to hear the arguments seeking cancellation of Yettinahole project on Wednesday, September 21.
The Yettinahole case would have got its final verdict at the Chennai bench of NGT. As one of the members of the bench got retired and another resigned, the verdict got delayed. A petition for the case to be moved to New Delhi was accepted. There are all the chances today that the arguments would be heard or postponed to a new date.
The petitioners against the controversial project are Purushotham Chitrapur from Mangaluru, K N Somashekhar from Mysuru, Yatiraju from Tumakuru and H A Kishore from Hassan. Justice Swatanter Kumar will head the bench and take up the pleas.
There have been severe protests from the people of the region against the project while former chief ministers, D V Sadananda Gowda and Veerappa Moily have been openly supporting it. The public have alleged that Yettinahole project is only a money-making projectand its implementation will not only cause adverse effects on the living species of Western Ghats, but will also leave a devastating impact on the population of the district.
