Mangaluru: The Kidney transplant team from Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Mangalore performed the first successful cadaveric kidney transplant across twin districts of Udupi and Mangalore.
The kidney was retrieved from a brain dead donor in Kasturba Hospital Manipal on Tuesday 22nd March 2016 and brought to Mangalore after necessary crossmatch. The recipient, a 25 year old lady had been on dialysis since the past 4 years and was unable to get a suitable donor from her family.
The transplant team included Dr. Mujeeburahiman, Dr. Nischith dsouza and Dr. Althaf Khan from the Department of Urology, Dr. Santosh Pai, Chief Nephrologist and Dr. Padmanabha Bhat, Dr. Ramamurthy and Dr. Shruthi from Department of Anesthesia.
This was the first such transplant. DC of Udupi Dr R Vishal, initiated the programme of organ donation in Udupi district along with the Departments of Urology and Nephrology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.
Y. Farhaad, Finance Director stated that Yenepoya University has been providing kidney transplant at subsided rates and has started the organ donation drive for cadaveric as well as living related kidney transplantation in Mangalore.
