Puttur: Peruvadi Narayana Bhat, a prominent Yakshagana artist at the age of 98, residing in Bappalige Tenkila Nooji in Balnadu village, Puttur taluk, peacefully passed away on Tuesday due to age-related ailments while under medical care at a private hospital in Puttur.
Affectionately known as Papanna Bhatru, Narayana Bhat earned widespread acclaim for his comedic roles in Yakshagana. His journey in the world of Yakshagana commenced at the age of 14 when he began his career at Dharmasthala Mela. Subsequently, he established his own ‘Mulki Mela’ and skillfully managed it for an impressive 13 years. He also made significant contributions to the Surathkal Mela during several years of service.
As an esteemed comedian who left an enduring legacy in the realm of Yakshagana, he received special recognition and affection from the audience for his portrayal of ‘Papanna’ in the celebrated episode ‘Papanna Vijaya.’ His portrayal of the character ‘Bahuka’ in the episode ‘Damayanti Punar Swayamvara’ brought a fresh perspective to the role. He skillfully depicted various characters in mythological episodes and also made a notable impact in Tulu episodes.
Narayana Bhat, belonging to the Padyana family, encountered the loss of his father during his early childhood and was raised at his grandfather’s residence in Peruvady. This is where he first stepped into the world of Yakshagana, leading to his well-known moniker, “Peruvadi Narayana Bhat.”
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a host of family members and admirers. The final rites for the departed soul will take place at the Chikkaputtur crematorium on Wednesday morning, as per family members.
