Women march to create a healthy society on their Day

Bantwal: Women marched through the streets of Bantwal in a rally, jointly organised by the Canara Organisation for Development of Peace (CODP), Dakshina Kannada (DK) Sahajeevan District Union, Namana Mahila Union on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8 in the hope of creating a healthy and peaceful society.

Flagging off the rally at 10 AM, Bantwal Muncipal Council President Yasmin called upon the society to recognise the love and selfless sacrifices of women in society.

Later, a public programme was held at the Sparsha Kala Mandir where CODP Director Fr. Ostwald Monteiro delivered the opening remarks. In his address, he briefed about the activities of CODP and said there should not be any gender bias in the society and equality should prevail and wished women success.

Fr. Richard Coelho, Director of Father Muller’s Institutions presided over the function after receiving the National Flag and CODP flag. In his address, he stressed upon the importance of peace and harmony in the country for peaceful co-existence, while relating violence to disease.

Retired professor of Roshni Nilaya Dr. Rita Noronha spoke about “The Role of women in building a healthy society.” Each woman should fight injustice and stand up against atrocities, by not giving up the habit of questioning in bringing a radical change to lead a humane life in society.

Mamtha Gatti, Zilla Panchayat member spoke in detail about the duties women need to perform and the opportunities available for them in building society. Mothers should ensure children are given value based education in reaching this goal, she added.

Bantwal circle Labour Commissioner Merlin Gracy explained about the opportunities in the Labour Department for women while emphasising on women’s empowerment.

Corrine Rasquinha, Joseph, Savitha Shamboor, Janardhan Kulal, Samshad, Charmadi Hasanabba were honoured by CODP in recognition of their contribution to the society in diverse fields.

Cultural programmes by women’s self-help group members and a play on women’s empowerment by the students of St. Aloysisus College drew wide appreciation from the gathering. More than 1000 women took part in the programme to coincide with the International Women’s Day -2018.
