Mangaluru: Women dressed in black were involved in a silent protest against atrocities committed against them across the nation and aired their grievances on multiple issues that need immediate attention in Mangaluru on January 30.
The protesters marched from Wenlock Hospital to Mini Vidhana Soudha carrying placards. The protest organised by the “Women’s Forum Against Atrocities” tried to create awareness among people and highlight issues of concern to the society at large.
The protesters were led by Atrady Amritha Shetty and Shaila Karavali of Coastal Writers Union.
The protesters wanted action by authorities concerned and listed 11 points in their agenda including action against forces dividing the nation based on caste, religion, ideology and language.
They wanted government to provide facilities to make women self-reliant and rein in forces detrimental to women’s unity.
The protesters sought social security for women in the unorganised sector and demanded action in cases of human rights violations, including abuse and forced abortion.
They also sought a blanket ban on liquor and controversial religious rituals.
The Forum had successfully organised similar protests in Mysuru during 2014, Bengaluru in 2015 and Vijayapura last year.
