Puttur : Vigilante groups have once again raised their ugly heads in Puttur. In a latest incident two Muslim students were assaulted by activists of a Hindu organization for the sole reason that they had hosted a lunch for their friends including girls from another community.
The incident took place in the heart of Puttur town on August 8, Thursday. The injured students Abdul Samad (21) and Mohammad Jamal (18) of Keremoole in Chikkamudnur village, are undergoing treatment at the Mahaveera Hospital. It is learnt,Samad was an MSW student of Srinivas College in Mangalore, while Mohammad Jamal was doing his second PUC at Puttur’s Pragathi Study Centre.
Sources said Samad and Jamal had invited their friends, a few MSW students who had come to Puttur on a field work of Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, for an Eid party. Accordingly, the two were having lunch with their friends namely Shwetha, Lohila, Vishwalatha and Dikshith at the Hotel Lakshmi in the heart of Puttur. It is learnt, while having lunch the students were threatened by three men including Sooraj and Sachin. They reportedly questioned the boys for having lunch with Hindu female students.
Later, when the students were travelling in an autorickshaw towards Salmara, they were waylaid by a group of ten persons who then reportedly assaulted the two boys in an isolated location. The two who are undergoing in hospital have even named some of the accused as Ganesh, Avinash, Sooraj, Sachin and Chandrasingh.
