Mangaluru: “World Alzheimer’s Month” (WAM), which was kicked started on September 1, through online/Webinar by People`s Association of Geriatric Empowerment (PAGE) came to an end on September 21. A formal valedictory programme was held on Monday, at Kadri Park.
The event was held in a simple manner due to the Corona pandemic.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the programme, MCC Commissioner Akshay Shridar said that COVID-19 has brought in a sense of equality among people.
“The Covid-19 has brought people to realise the meaning of relationships. It has united relative and friends to help each other during the pandemic, and those affected with the Virus. The pandemic has taken away many lives, which is sad, and therefore we need to take care and follow the guidelines of Covid-19. We should also appreciate the work done by Çovid Warriors’, like the doctors, nurses, health care staff, police, media, among others, who are playing a vital role during the pandemic. I commend PAGE and its members for their initiatives and programmes aimed at caring and loving Alzheimer’s/Dementia persons,” he said.
The programme began with a welcome address by PAGE Vice-President Dr Prabha Adhikari M R, who spoke about the significance of the World Alzheimer’s Day said that issues like Dementia can affect anyone, his/her life as well as their families.
“If you have been diagnosed with dementia, or you are caring for someone with the condition, remember that there are advice and support available to help you live well. People with dementia shouldn’t simply stop doing what they enjoy in life; instead, they should try to remain as independent as possible and continue to enjoy their usual activities. Over time, people with dementia will need help to cope at home, and they may even need residential care in a nursing home eventually,” she said adding that the ones battling Dementia and their family members are not alone in this journey as organisations like PAGE extend advice and support to them.
Emphasising on living a healthy lifestyle, she said that eating well and exercising are important for everyone.
The programme was inaugurated by releasing Red & White coloured balloons by the dignitaries of the day.

The short programme ended with dance by members of Upasanya Dance Team, choreographed by Mrs Prathiksha Prabhu.
The gathering remembered and missed the presence of Dr Olinda Pereira, Director of Vishwas Trust for the elderly, Mangaluru, who is the Founder Principal of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, Mangaluru and also the President of PAGE. She had died on May 31, 2020, at the age of 95.
