Udupi: The Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. (UPCL) has finally sanctioned Rs 3.02 crore to compensate 302 traditional seashore fishermen who suffered a setback in business during the laying of a pipeline for the company.

Confirming this, Udupi Deputy Commissioner R Vishal, said that the administration received the money from the company about a week ago.

The pipeline was laid in 2009 to pump water in and out to the power plant.

Leader of Traditional Seashore Fishermen’s Associations Yellur Bharat Kumar, said that when the pipeline was laid, the seashore fishermen faced great difficulty in catching fish at the stretch from Yermal Tenka to Yermal Bada which affected their income.
Hence, the fishermen’s associations had urged the State government to provide compensation.

Agreeing to the demand, UPCL had agreed to compensate Rs 3.02 crore, with each affected fisherman getting Rs one lakh.
