
Mangaluru: Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and veteran Congress leader M Veerappa Moily has given credit of his success in his political career to his alma mater-University College, Mangaluru.
Inaugurating the ‘Ravindra Kala Bhavan’ building, here at the campus of the heritage structure of the 150-year-old college at Hampankatta, Moily termed the institution as a ‘laboratory of leadership’.
“Whatever I am, I am because of this college. There were teachers who guided us and encouraged us, not just to take up academic activities, but also co-curricular activities. We were encouraged to read and somewhere I believe that all those readings helped me in my political journey,” Moily said recalling how his teachers encouraged him to write scripts for plays and also act in them.
“I used to pen down poetry for the college magazine, write essays and also take part in debates. All this used to boost our creative side,” he said adding that the University College is not a college for degree certificates, but it is an institution that aims at Human Resource Development.
Moily also promised to work towards getting funds of Rs 1.15 cr that is required for further development of the college.
District in-charge minister UT Khader, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mayor Bhaskar Moily, Registrar of Mangalore University Dr A M Khan, Dharmanna Nayak, President, Alumni Association, Hareesh Pai, Architect, Arun from Nirmiti Kendra Udupi, Prof. Uday Kumar, principal of the college among others were present.
Later, speaking to reporters in the city, Moily lauded the IAF for the heroic surgical strike of February 26 that wiped off several terror camps breeding on Pakistani soil.
“India never takes such actions without deliberations. However, we have to be extremely cautious about our enemy nations, specifically Pakistan, which is a dejected state that provides safe abodes for terror elements”, he said.
