Thokkottu: Six shops functioning in the Ullal City Municipal Council building in Thokkottu had to face the brunt for defaulting the rent. On Monday, six shops were locked by the CMC Commissioner and officials during a raid.

The shop number 7, 26, 30, 38, 40 and 48 had defaulted the rent running into lakhs of rupees.

Though the CMC has served notices to the defaulters over the last six months, the entrepreneurs failed to respond to the notices.

Addressing the reporters, Commissioner Roopa T Shetty said that there are 48 shops in the CMC complex and as per records, the CMC is due to received Rs 18 lac from the entrepreneurs running business in the complex.

“When our notices did not evoke any response, we have come to raid the complex. The non payment of rent is hindering the developmental works of the CMC,” she said.

However, it was found that the ones who had taken the shops on rent for nominal rates (ranging from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000) have rented it to third party at a much higher rent going up to Rs 10,000.

One of the woman, who runs a shop here said that she had been paying Rs 10,000 and had even made a payment of Rs 2 lac as deposit. Her shop too has been closed for a mistake that has been committed by the someone else.
