Udupi: “The farmers should be informed about the latest technology involvement of mechanism to get high yields”, said the Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake during the inauguration of the two-day event ‘Krishi Utsav and Horticulture Expo’ on Saturday January 25.








Vinay Kumar Sorake also said that in the district, large numbers of farmers are dependent on agriculture and government is also keen on promoting agriculture in order to help the farmers lead a better life. Thus the state government has released, Rs 12 crore towards the Brahamavar sugar factory to pay the pending arrears to the farmers and laborers.
The Varahi irrigation project is pending since 35 years, with regards to the project Sorake said that the project which was supposed to release water to the farmers in the surrounding area with an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore has remained incomplete.
“Around Rs 450 crore is already invested over the project and additional funds are needed to complete the project. Meanwhile it has also taken measures to complete the project”, he added.
He said a cabinet sub-committee is formed to look into Kasturi Rangan report before the implementations whereas the gram panchayat is also scheduled to look into the matter.
The minister said that he has spoke to the CM with reference to the project and has requested the CM to relax the CRZ norms on the sidelines of the regulations followed in Goa and Kerala states.
Speaking on the occasion Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde said that stating the proposed ban on areca nut is rumor which has spread without proper substantiation, he added that the government will at any cost not permit the ban on areca nut.
He added that farmer should be self sufficient and both the central and state government has instigated many plans for the farmer but unfortunately the farmers have been unable to avail those benefits. Concluding his point he urged the government to take steps towards welfare of these farmers.
