In the Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency, the campaign trails of major political parties are prominently featuring the Tulu language, reflecting a concerted effort to connect with the electorate. Both the BJP and Congress candidates have been addressing gatherings in Tulu, with party workers prominently displaying Tulu flags during campaign events.
Recognizing the significance of the Tulu-speaking demographic, which forms the majority in the constituency, parties are striving to capitalize on their sentiments. There’s a strong emphasis on advocating for the inclusion of Tulu in Schedule VIII of the Constitution and its official recognition as a language in Karnataka.
During pre-nomination roadshows, BJP candidate Capt Brijesh Chowta and Congress candidate R Padmaraj were seen wearing Tulunadu shawls, with party workers waving Tulu flags. Chowta emphasized his commitment to promoting Tulu, pledging to prioritize its inclusion in Schedule VIII and ensure official recognition in Karnataka. Similarly, Padmaraj vowed to prioritize Tulu’s recognition and protect Tulunadu’s culture, traditions, and beliefs.
Party leaders echoed these sentiments, with BJP district president Sathish Kumpala affirming the party’s commitment to safeguarding Tulunadu’s interests. DCC president K Harish Kumar stated that Padmaraj has vowed to advocate for Tulu in Parliament if elected as MP of Dakshina Kannada.
Activists and members of Tulu organizations are hopeful that elected representatives from coastal districts will fulfill their demands for Tulu’s inclusion in Schedule VIII and its official recognition as a language in Karnataka.
