Mangaluru: Two days after the tragic accident that occurred at Nanthur, it appears that the district administration is under stress to quickly bring in some modification in the traffic arrangements to avoid possible accidents.

While a proposal to construct an underpass connecting the KPT road to Pumpwell at the estimated cost of 53-60 crore, is pending approval and execution, the Deputy Commissioner (DC), A B Ibrahim on Monday suggested speedy alterations as immediate measures. The DC accompanied by Commissioner of MCC Hephsiba Korlapati and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Uday N Nayak ordered the National Highway Authority of India to widen some sections of the road.
The ACP, terming the place as unscientific, told one of the NHAI officials to clean up the portion of road that goes to Bikarnakatte. The place would experience widening of the road to ease the traffic movement. Though locals expressed that a speed breaker is a must, DC said it could not be done as it violates NHAI road norms.
The MCC commissioner echoed the suggestions proposed by DC and ACP and advised NHAI to widen some section of road that connects to KPT. There were no other major modifications suggested, apart from responding to the pleas of locals who demanded to shift the bus stand located at Nanthur to somewhere on NH 17 (on the way to KPT). DC requested MCC commissioner to relocate flower vendors operating at the junction at Nanthur to some other nearby place, as it currently obstructs the smooth flow of traffic.
