Mangaluru: The Toer Magazine Collective (https://toermagazine.wordpress.com/) together with Spearhead Media, Global Tv and Gramavidya is shortly launching two first of its kind 3-month project based programs designed for art enthusiasts artists and visual journalists – Art Appreciation and Practice and Visual Journalism and Design. Both the programs will be conducted at the Center for Art and Design, INTACH, Kodial Guthu House (West Annexe), GG Road, Ballal Bagh Mangalore 575003. Both the programs will commence from 7th January 2019.
The Programs will be delivered by Subhas Basu, Architect and Nemiraj Shetty, a visual artist and art curator. They are part of a larger set of workshops that they conduct regularly. These include Alternative Building Technology, Design Thinking and Application, Art and Architectural Conservation, Heritage Listing and Documentation, Creative Writing and Writing for Media, Poetry and Micro Fiction, Travel and Documentary Photography, Conceptual Photography, Script Writing and Short Film Making, Photojournalism and Zine Makin, Magazine Editing and Production, Illustration And Comic Book Creation, Blogging and Online Publishing, Art Teacher Education, and Clay Modelling and Terra Cotta.
These programs and workshops will be conducted in association with Spearhead Media Pvt. Ltd (www.spearheadpvtltd.com), a media house in Mangalore that own and runs the two popular websites newskarnataka.com and newskannada.com and publishes a popular English monthly – Karnataka Today, hosts a YouTube Channel NKTv and runs a design house Verdevice, besides, Global TV (globaltv.in) a pioneer in internet TV and Gramavidya, a voluntary organization for research and dissemination of alternative technologies.
Visual Journalism & Design
The Visual Journalism & Design program is an intense 3 month Project based advanced program that will be conducted from Monday to Friday. The seats are limited to 15 and competition for them seems intense.
What is Visual Journalism: Visual journalism is the combination of graphics, text, images and layout. Along with photography, illustration and story narrations, it also renders simplicity to complex issues of typography and editorial design especially the importance of visuals and juxtaposed text in communicating ideas effectively.
Should you attend? This is a project-based specialization program designed to cater to those individuals who have a bent for journalism, photography, caricature, graphic design and creative writing. The program is intended to prepare individuals to professionally practice visual applications and offer them a wider theoretical and practical perspective with a strong understanding of documentary photography, magazine layout and print design. If you desire to advance your pre-existing skills in these areas, or independently practice the same you should attend.

Post Program career choices: The participant has a choice of taking up a career as a Creative writer, press photographer with a magazine, newspaper or online media. Copywriter, ad designer and photographer with an ad agency
Fee: The fee is highly subsidized for a course of this nature. For students &interns: Rs 24,000/-; others: Rs 30,000/-; the fee includes Lectures, talks, demonstrations, workshops, video and film screening, exhibition and catalog printing. It, however, excludes all project expenses, travel expenses, laptops, camera, lenses and software.
Art Appreciation & Practice
The Art Appreciation and Practice program is also an intense 3 month Project based advanced program that will be conducted from Monday to Friday. The seats are limited to just 12 and competition is expected to be intense.
What is this program all about: Modern art practice is idea-based rather than a display of skill. This program is designed to cater to those individuals who have a bent towards the Visual Arts. The Goal of the program is to promote creative appreciation of art, disseminate information on modern art practices, encourage building a culture-specific artistic perspective, support cross-cultural dialogue, promote the exchange of ideas and artistic application, and explore its possibilities by collaborating with multiple mediums. It is expected that at the end of the program, the participants will be able to independently visualize, plan and execute ideas and create their own narratives.
