Terror alert: Over 1,500 cops kept vigil

Bangalore:After the Centres alert on possible communal riots in six states, including Karnataka, the Intelligence Bureau had sent a specific alert to the city police to keep a tight vigil on the highly sensitive area in K.G. Halli police limits on Friday, September 13, which was also marked for Ganesha immersion in the area.

Unprecedented security was deployed in the 9 km stretch between Pottery Town and Thannisandra junction with 1,500 policemen, most of them armed from the civil police, 14 platoons of the Karnataka State Armed Reserve Police and 18 platoons of the City Armed Reserve.

“There was a specific alert from the IB on possible communal tension in the highly sensitive region, which comprises Tannery Road, Shampura and Nagwara on September 13. The security apparatus, which is fit for the entire Bengaluru district, was deployed that day on the entire stretch to prevent any mishap. Quick response teams and Vajras (strking force) were also at standby. As a precautionary measure, even women constables were deployed during the security bundobast to ensure safety of women,” said a senior police officer.

The Centre has also asked the state police to maintain high vigil in Belgaum and Gulbarga during September 18 and 19 the key Ganesha immersion days.
