Mangalore: Some sort of tension prevailed in Kadri on September 6, Friday when hundreds of ABVP members including students gheraoed the residence of Mangalore South MLA JR Lobo condemning the failure of the authorities to take steps to provide better amenities to Backward Classes and Minorities Hostels.
The Kadri police who arrived, took the students to custody which further added to problems. There was tension outside the Kadri police station where a large crowd gathered demanding release of the detained activists. Matters turned further worse when Congress workers too arrived and demanded that an FIR be registered against the protestors. An altercation followed and both sides were unrelenting.
Finally, the MLA who visited the spot, assured to hold a meeting on September 7, Saturday to discuss the issue. When he asked the agitators about the hostel, they said it was the BCM hostel at Suratkal. Reacting to the same, the MLA questioned why they did not take up the matter with Mangalore North MLA.
Speaking to media persons, Lobo suspected political conspiracy and questioned why the matter was not solved when the BJP leaders were representing the constituency all these years.
It has been learnt, the MLA has instructed the police to release the students among the protestors.
Kadri police have registered a case.
