Team SJEC Racing excels at the prestigious ‘Mahindra SAEBAJA 2017’

Mangaluru: The strong contingent of Team SJEC Racing from St Joseph Engineering College – Vamanjoor, Mangaluru showcased a stellar performance at the prestigious All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) racing event Mahindra SAEBAJA 2017 held at NATRIP site at Pithampur in Indore – Madhya Pradeshfrom 15th to 21st February, 2017.

The team of highly talented students made some noteworthy achievements. It is the only team from Mangalore region to successfully complete the competition out of the 4 other teams that participated from this region and the first team to complete the most challenging ENDURANCE event from the state of Karnataka. Team SJEC Racing is also ranked 3rd in Karnataka in terms of overall ranking. Nationally, the team has secured 26th position in Acceleration and Endurance event and 47th overall rank among 150 teams that participated.

SAE BAJA is a National level engineering competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) – India to Engineer and Manufacture a Single Seat ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE in accordance to the Rules set down by the organizers.

SJEC had started the SAEINDIA-SJEC Collegiate Club in 2016 with the participation of 70 members. The Club is driven by the Department of Mechanical Engineering with Mr Vijay V.S., and Mr Yathish Kumar as the faculty coordinators. The work on the SJEC ATV named TURTLE 1.0 commenced in January 2016. The team had five Departments: Design, Power train, Suspension, Steering, and Braking that worked to develop the final product. Previously, SJEC Racing Team had secured 1st place in the State and 18thnationally at the Virtual Baja Competition held in July 2016. Later, the team secured the prestigious Spirit of ESI 2017 awardin the Enduro Student India Competition organized at Coimbatore by Delta Inc. in Jan 2017.

Dilish, Student Chairperson and Roger Pereira, Vice Chairperson stated that the experiences gained in developing the ATV has made them better engineers and thanked the SJEC Management for all the support. Dr Sudheer M., HOD – Mechanical Engineering expressed his utmost satisfaction in the performance of the students where they have applied the concepts learnt in class to create a fully functional and nationally competitive ATV. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal of SJEC opined that the focus on developing the ATV has made the students appreciative of hard work, discipline and the intricacies of Engineering. Congratulating the students, the Director of the Institution, Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo stated that this achievement is an indicator of the quality of education offered at SJEC where it focuses on the overall development of the its students.
