Mangalore : Doctors at the KMC Hospital in Mangalore were successful in extracting as many as 29 gold capsules from stomach of a person through colonoscopy on February 7, Friday.
The man identified as 44-year-old Shashidharan from Kanhangad in Kasargod district had swallowed the capsules each weighing 350 grams in order to avoid getting detected by the Customs officials when he landed in Mangalore by a flight from Dubai on February 5.
Though he managed to escape the eyes of the Customs officials, he soon fell sick and had to be hospitalised. After doctors tried in vain in get the capsules ejected naturally by giving him laxatives and enema, they opted for colonoscopy.
The value of the swallowed gold is estimated at Rs 13 lakhs. However, Shashidharan will not be arrested once he gets discharged from hospital, as the value of the seized gold is less than Rs 20 lakhs. But,he is likely to face action for the smuggling attempt.
