Mangaluru: The beach city’s prominent landmark, Surathkal Lighthouse is all set to get a new look now that Minister of State for Ports and Inland Water Transport Mansukh L Mandaviya has cleared the development proposal for this area.
An announcement in this regard was made by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel in a letter addressed to the media.
The DGLL has prepared an architectural design for the lighthouse and a tender will soon be invited for the same.
The history goes back to 1969-70 when the work on the lighthouse began. The lighthouse was completed in the year 1972 and has become a prominent tourist attraction in recent years, which is why MP Nalin had requested the MoS to develop the place.
Under the proposed development, an approach bridge, capsule lift, children’s play area, lighting, landscaping, hardscaping, security cabin, entrance, and ticket counters are included. Additionally, the ground floor of the Automatic Identification System building will be converted into a gallery and the building’s first floor will be converted into a lighthouse control centre.
As part of the development project, there will also be a compound wall around the lighthouse area and a connecting road from the lighthouse to the beach will be constructed.
