Mangaluru: In an unprecedented turn of events, villages across Sullia taluk experienced an exceptional rainfall of approximately 100 mm – marking the highest recorded precipitation in a single day for January. Farmers diligently collected accurate rainfall data using on-site rain gauges to track this unusual weather phenomenon.

P G S N Prasad, a seasoned data compiler since 1976 from Balila, Sullia taluk, reported a remarkable rainfall of 105 mm in his area, emphasizing that this surpasses any January rainfall since 2000. On January 12, 2000, the highest recorded rainfall was 42 mm, a record broken by the recent deluge.

Kishan Dinkar, sharing his father’s rainfall data, disclosed that Adenja Uruvalu village received 96 mm of rainfall on January 6, 2021. Additionally, Raviprasad from Nekrekaje in Pembathady reported an astonishing 171 mm of rainfall in his village. Meteorologists anticipate more rain in January, posing a potential threat to existing records.

Despite the excitement, the unseasonable rains bring unwelcome news, particularly for Arecanut growers who had laid out their harvest for drying. Rubber growers may also face challenges with reduced latex production, and the yield of mangoes and jackfruits in Sullia taluk is expected to be adversely affected. The agricultural community braces itself for the impact of this unexpected weather, with further disruptions predicted in the coming days.
