A team of skilled experts, led by consultant surgical oncologist Dr. Ravi Varma K at Kanachur Hospital & Research Centre, recently achieved a significant milestone by treating a 40-year-old woman suffering from advanced sarcoma. The team included medical oncologists Dr. Guruprasad and Dr. Najeeb, plastic surgeon Dr. Kumarkrishna, and anaesthetist Dr. Samuel.
Dr. Varma revealed that the patient had been admitted with a history of swelling in her right buttock persisting for one-and-a-half years. The sarcoma had progressed to stage 4, spreading to her lungs. Despite undergoing four cycles of chemotherapy, the tumor showed relentless growth. While other oncologists had recommended palliative chemotherapy as the only option, Dr. Varma chose a surgical approach. The procedure involved the removal of a substantial swelling in the buttock, including part of the spine weighing around 8kg, followed by a reconstruction process.
Remarkably, the surgical team successfully preserved the spine, and six months post-surgery, the patient is reported to be doing well. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of the surgical intervention in challenging cases of advanced sarcoma.
