Mangaluru: Generally, older generation whip younger ones for ignoring risk aversion measures thus inviting possible dangers. In a subtle contradiction to prevailing view, lads from Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology of Puttur on Saturday, April 25 held a bike rally pressing to introduce compulsory head gear (helmet) for bikers on the roads of Puttur Town Municipal Council.

According to the press release, the rally started off from Nehru Nagara. The riders moved through the city touching Darbe Circle, and concluding at Puttur Assistant Commissioner’s (AC) office. The rally was flagged off by Dr Linganagowda Kulkarni, Principal of the college, encouraging students to spread awareness on wearing a helmet.
The key note speaker, Betta Eshwara Bhat, Chairman, Town Planning Authority addressing the gathered at AC office urged the youth to voluntarily wear head gears in order to avoid damages during accidents. The traffic laws must stress on making helmet compulsory, he added.
“I am happy that students have come out to convene a rally with a motto of understanding the importance of wearing a helmet and its safety measures in Puttur,” opined Vishweshwara Bhat, member of Vivekananda Vidhyavardhaka Sangha in his brief address.
A participant of Bike rally Puneeth Rai speaking to Newskarnataka.com said students gave the memorandum to Puttur AC and MLA Shakuntala Shetty suggesting them to make helmet mandatory while riding. The same copy would be forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada. As many as 200 bikes took part in the rally.
