Mangaluru: Following the death of two persons, who underwent surgery at the Omega Hospital here, under the Vajpayee Arogyashree Scheme recently, the Deputy Commissioner A.B Ibrahim on Thursday ordered the stoppage of critical surgeries under the scheme until the inquiry on the alleged medical negligence is complete.
There was tension in Arlapadavu after two persons – Poovakka (69) and Haseena (10) died reportedly due to medical negligence. The protestors held the Primary Health Centre and the local medical officer responsible for death, for luring them to undergo surgery.
On Wednesday, Dr. Rao and other personnel from the department met Mr. Ibrahim. The DC told the district medical officers that there was a need for mechanism to keep track of the selection of beneficiaries and also that of the follow-up, after surgeries.
“There are government schemes and there is a need to oversee them. This has to be done in the interest of patients who undergo the procedures”, he said and directed Dr Rao to stop conducting critical cardiac operation under the scheme till the inquiry into the two deaths was completed.
