Mangaluru: Stolen property worth Rs 55 lakh out of Rs 61 lakh recovered was handed over to the owners by the police during the Property Parade held at the SP office premises on Thursday January 14.

The last parade on such a big scale was held 5-6 years ago in Dakshina Kannada by the then IGP Gopal Hosuru and SP Subrahmaneshwar Rao.

Handing over the property, Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa informed that the rest of the recovered property will be given back to the owners after receiving the court order. He said that most of the valuables such as mangalsutras and idols of deities hold emotional attachments to the owners and hence, one needs to take preventive measures to ensure safety measures.

Later, a demonstration of ‘Intrusion Alarm System’ was held. The system uses sensors to detect intrusion. It can be connected to as many as 15 mobile phones. During a suspicious activity, the phone numbers provided will receive SMS alert and siren will be activated. The siren has to be deactivated only by the remote given to the owners. The system will be great use to banks and jewellery outlets, a techie informed.

In the wake of firm owners using cheap quality cameras for protection, the techie informed that cameras of minimum 1080px resolution should be used in order to detect faces of culprits. SP Sharanappa urged the public to use bank lockers to store gold and other valuable items. He informed that 80-90 per cent of the members attached to shrines and other religious places in the district have reported of installing cameras and a meet in this regard will be called up next month.
