Mangaluru: We have all come across incidents where a woman holding a child in her arms and coming to us for alms breaks our heart, not for the woman but the baby. Here’s a recent one where a woman was found asking for alms while holding in her arms a seven month old baby.
The 44 year old, who was later identified at Rubiya (also Fathima) was found committing the heinous act at a mosque in Mandi Mohalla, in a clever step of seeking the sympathy of some pious devotees.
What they do not realize is that the world today is only too familiar with human trafficking to believe and fall for games like these.
She confessed to abducting the child from the Mangalore Junction Railway station, one of the worst places anyone can trust leaving a little baby.
The poor mother had no choice, having herself gone begging at the station. Perhaps, it is the act of a woman like this, and the consequences thereon, that prevented the poor woman from taking her child along, though this was a true blood relation.
From this, we only see the confusion that emerges from dishonest actions like these, where a woman chooses to make life harder for someone in a similar situation as her.
Good for her, this mother recovered her child on the 22nd of January, right at the masjid in which the woman who stole on the 12th of the same month stood begging.
DNA tests clearly proved that she was the mother of the child. On further investigations, police inspectors Ramakrishna K K and Sub-Inspector Pradeep T R sent forth a chargesheet to the court, which was presided over by Jyothi Pramod Nayak, with twelve witnesses, who made their presence at the court.
The mother had perhaps been in search of the child, and we can only imagine her joy on getting it back, which often doesn’t happen in a matter of ten days, and mostly not at all.
In the light of this, it is only wise that the woman be given a four month sentence, in addition to a fine, failing which she will have to spend an additional month in prison. And we hope this is a good enough time to reflect on her act in prison.
