State govt releases Rs 14 crore as compensation for Pachanady garbage-slide victims

Mangaluru: In some much needed good news for the families that were affected by the Pachanady garbage-slide caused by incessant rains in 2019, it is learnt that the state government has released a sum of Rs 14 crores towards compensation for the victims.

An announcement regarding the same was made by MLAs Dr Y Bharath Shetty and D Vedavyas Kamath.

A few days ago, MP and BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel, Kamath and Shetty had submitted a petition to the state government to compensated the affected families of the Mandara area to the tune of Rs 20 crores.

The Rs 14 crores released by the state government was taken out of the SFC special grant for the year 2019-20. The amount was released by the Urban Development Department to the Mangaluru City Corporation to be disbursed to the families that were affected by the garbage-slide in 2019.

The state government had previously released a compensation of Rs 8 crores for the affected families.

It can be recalled that in August of 2019, the Mandara are of Pachanady was covered in garbage after the incessant rains caused the piled up trash to slide down into the village, causing damage to the nearby farms and houses. The rains had caused the garbage to slide to a distance of up to 2 km, creating havoc.
