Mangaluru: ‘Nayak’s Clock Factory’, which had been functioning since the past nine decades, is history now.

The clock factory is shut down now with none in the Nayak family willing to run it. Late Vaman Nayak started this factory as he was a specialist in transistorised pendulum and hand-wound clocks. This unique clock factory was inaugurated by then chief minister of Karnataka S Nijalingappa on January 13, 1957.

This factory was an expert in making the traditional winding clock that was exported to the US and Germany. Earlier, 200 clocks were produced and sold everyday. This factory had over 200 workers and it was known for punching clocks for security guards, small winding clocks among others.

Nayak had six children. Among them, Devadas Nayak and Sathish Nayak showed interest in continuing their father’s clock business. But, Devadas Nayak died in the year 2006 and his two sons Bharath Nayak and Vijay Nayak also passed away in the year 2008 and 2011 respectively. Though Devadas Nayak’s wife Hemalatha Nayak and daughter-in-law Shobha Nayak have been running the factory, they are forced to stop the business now.

Hence, the factory stopped production in March after the available clock making machines were sold.
