Mangalore:International Senior Citizens’ Day was observed at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Bajjodi on October 1, Tuesday under the joint aegis of the Dakshina Kannada District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Women and Child Welfare Department, Mangalore Senior Citizens Association and Self Help Groups.
District in-charge Minister Ramanatha Rai who inaugurated the programme exhorted the youngsters to take good care of their aged parents. He also deplored the present tendency of youngsters considering their aged parents as a burden.
Rai further informed that the government was helping the senior citizens by offering them old age pension of Rs 500 per month. The government is also running several old age homes, he said.
VT Shenoy, President of Mangalore Senior Citizens’ Association, submitted a memorandum to the minister, enlisting various demands of the senior citizens.
Gertrude Veigas, President of Women and Child Welfare Department,
Dr Olinda Pereira and Sr Josphine and others were present on the occasion.
