Seminar discusses drastic effects of proposed Niddodi project

Mangalore :A seminar was organised by the International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations and Karnataka Theological College, Balmatta at Sahodaya Hall on August 21, Saturday to discuss the consequences of the proposed thermal power project at Niddodi.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr Ravindranath Shanbhogue, President of the Human Rights Protection Foundation, Udupi said the people should leave no stone unturned in seeing to it that the Government dropped the Niddodi project.He said there was a need to create awareness on the drastic consequences of the project.A legal recourse is also one option available to prevent the government from going ahead with the project, he further added.

Shanbhogue further stated that coal based projects are destructive and cited the example of the UPCL thermal plant at Padubidri.Man will have to pay a heavy price for all his follies by setting up such projects that contribute to ecological imbalance, he observed.

Mathrubhoomi Samrakshana Samithi Convenor and journalist Kiran Manjanabailu who also spoke, said the project if implemented would have devastating effects not only on Niddodi but the entire district.He said the distinct culture and traditions of Niddodi, agriculture as well as the fragile environment of the region will be lost forever in case the project becomes a reality.

Alphonse D Souza, President of Mathrubhoomi Samrakshana Samithi also spoke on the occasion.Rev Dr H M Watson, Professor of Karnataka Theological College, earlier inaugurated the seminar.

Roy Castelino, President of Mangalore unit of IFKCA, Dennis DSilva, IFKCA State Convenor and others were present on the occasion.
