Mangaluru: Shadow (difficulties) are part of human life but rely on the light behind the shadow to explore new opportunities and become social entrepreneurs to bring about social change, Justice K S Bilagi said while addressing a students gathering at National level social work students symposium “Spandana- 2017” at Roshni Nilaya on February 9.
Inaugurating the two-day symposium on social entrepreneurship and innovation, Principal District Civil and Sessions Judge of Dakshina Kannada called upon the youth to make use of opportunities by taking risks. Positive Ideas, thinking in those lines followed by actions can change the world, Bilagi said, giving instances and naming people who brought about social transformation in the world.
Taking names of Buddha, Basavanna and Shankaracharya, Bilagi said, most of them died young and achieved great mile stones despite shortcomings during those times.“Hold on, be strong and all things work for good”,were his words taken from Hoover dam site in Las Vegas, US and added one should not rely on luck alone but rather work hard to achieve dreams.
He recalled the lives of philosopher Socrates, Scientist Thomas Alva Edison and said in case of the former, wife was behind his success whereas the in the case of latter mother played a vital role, emphasising on the importance human relationship on society.
Creativity, hard work and communication skills help each one achieve dreams and age (young or old) and times we live in should not be the barrier, Justice Bilagi noted taking examples of young entrepreneurs like Ankur Jain and Colonel Sanders of KFC chain.
He gave examples of Eunice Mohammed in social sector and Dhirubhai Ambani in business sector, which brought about change in their respective spheres and stressed on the importance of Individual integrity which also can spring social change.
Continuing form where Justice K S Bilagi left, Vice Principal of Roshni Nilaya, Jenis P Mary dealt on different forms of knowledge including explicit, implicit and tacit but with great poise she stated “personal and professional values stand above knowledge.”
Terming Earth as the second womb for every creation she stressed on the need to fight against consumerism and materialism to plug the veils that plague entire society.
Welcome address was delivered by Evelyn Benis, Convenor whereas Vinita Fernandes expressed gratitude to all those present at the inaugural.
The programme was well compered by Joel Pinto and Krithi. The symposium will continue for two days with sessions marked for different categories. Ashoka Innovators for youth change makers is likely to be an absorbing session during the two day symposium.
