Bantwal: Thieves broke open the windows of an arecanut godown here at Talapady in B C Road and escaped with arecanut worth more than Rs 2 lakhs, on Tuesday, April 5.
Surprisingly, this is the second theft case in the same godown. Six months back theft took place and the thieves were arrested by the Bantwal city police. The police had also directed the owner to install CCTV and employ guards for security. But the owner had not paid heed to the suggestions.
The theft took place in a godown owned by one Anwar Hussain, a resident of Pandeshwar in Mangaluru.
The thieves took away areca sacks weighing 881kgs.
The incident came to light when the godown workers reported to duty on Tuesday morning.
Immediately owner Anwar and the Bantwal city police were informed about the theft.
On learning about the theft, Bantwal city police crime branch ASI Gangadhar and staff visited the spot. The canine squad and finger print experts too were called to the spot. Further investigation is on. The stolen areca is estimated to cost more than Rs 2.42 lakhs.
A police team has been formed to nab the culprits. The police suspect the involvement of locals in the case.
