The message ‘Mosquito bites health flights’ was written near the sculpture.
The theme of World Health Day 2014 this year is the vector-borne diseases – ‘small bite, big threat’.
Vector-borne illnesses are spread by blood-sucking arthropods, such as mosquitoes, sand flies and ticks. These small “vectors” carry infectious microbes which can be transmitted by a single bite.
Some of the more common global vector-borne diseases include malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis, although there are many more.
Vector-borne diseases can be transmitted to animals as well as to people.
